Microblading vs Ombré Powder Brows

With more and more eyebrow shaping, filling and tinting techniques available, it can be hard to keep track of them all and to know what each of them entail. In this article we will look at two semi-permanent eyebrow tattooing techniques; comparing the procedure, result and aftercare, so that you can make the best decision for your beautiful brows!

Microblading

Microblading has been around for a while now and has been quite popular with celebrities and everyday folk alike. The procedure involves making tiny featherlike incisions with a unique microblading pen and filling it with a special ink. Unlike tattooing, these very fine strokes blend with your existing eyebrows to give a full and natural look. The whole process can be slightly uncomfortable, but not necessarily painful.

Microbladed eyebrows can take up to a month to come into its own. Your eyebrows will go through different stages of healing. Early on your brows might seem way too dark and sometime later it could seem like the ink is fading, but don’t panic, because around the fourth week it will settle and you will be strutting around with the full and textured brows you’ve always dreamed of!

Ombré powder brows

First it was ombré hair and now ombré brows that are all the rage! As the name suggests, the eyebrows are shaded, with a faded front and a crisp tail of the brow. Ombré powder brows are achieved with an airbrush or shading technique, by dispersing extremely fine dots of pigments onto the epidermis layer of the skin. The procedure is less invasive than microblading as there are no incisions made into the skin.

The result of the ombré brow is more powdery and fluffy – like that of a brow softly shaded with pencil or powder – and ensures a beautifully polished and rounded off look. Ombré can be done in a whole range of colours and shapes. It might be a good idea to go with a picture of your dream brows so your technician knows whether you are a high arch, or more of a straight and flat kind of gal!

Aftercare

Both microblading and ombré powder brows require some special care in the first week or two after the procedure. You will be given a whole list of do’s and don’ts by your technician or therapist but here are a few tips for keeping those brows in tip-top shape:

Avoid strenuous exercise that will cause excessive sweating in your face
Keep the eyebrows dry for the first week after the procedure
Avoid harsh sunlight
Apply antibiotic ointment as provided
Do not pick at scabs, tug at, or scratch the eyebrow area
Do not use any creams, oils or moisturisers that have not been prescribed by your technician

Further down the road

Whether you opt for the more natural or the powdery look, you will need to go for a touch up at around 6-8 months after your initial procedure. This is just to fill in spots where the pigment didn’t reach and maybe do a bit of reshaping or shading to ensure that you are 100% satisfied with your glam look!

Depending on your skin type, your lifestyle and how well you take care of your eyebrows (remember to apply your sunscreen diligently!), both microblading and ombré could last you between 1 and 3 years, although some argue that the effect of ombré powder brows lasts longer than microblading.
